Frappuccino is amongst the bestsellers at Starbucks. It is available in several variants and flavors, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy with a Frappuccino. It is worth noting that frappuccino is a trademarked brand of Starbucks.

That’s the reason you’ll find a Frappuccino only at Starbucks or those permitted by the company to use the trademark. This is one reason other brands use the more conventional name for their beverages: the Frappe.

Making Your Frappuccino

At its heart, what is a Frappuccino? The word is a portmanteau of ‘Frappe’ and ‘Cappuccino’. When it was first created, the Frappuccino included a shot of espresso added to the cold treat of a frappe.

It’s less popular to add espresso because it causes the ingredients to expand. It also affects the consistency of the beverage. Most store-bought Frappuccinos don’t contain an espresso unless you ask for it specifically.

Preparing The Coffee Concentrate

Starbucks uses its own Frappuccino Roast Coffee for preparation. It’s a powder and adds the flavor without creating issues like an espresso. For home use, you can consider a coffee concentrate.

There are two ways to go about this. One, make robust espresso or drip coffee. I say “solid” to account for the coffee being diluted. Please keep it in the refrigerator until it is cold, then use it in the recipe.

The second method requires more work and time but is favored by many. For this one, use the cold brew method. Add water to coarse ground coffee beans, and let it steep for a day or maybe two. Use a strainer to filter this into a mason jar and keep it in the fridge. There it is, the cold brew coffee concentrate that’s good for many recipes.

Or, use one or two shots of espresso the old-fashioned way. It’s what got the beverage its name and fame and continues to be a trendy option. Well, enough with the preparations, let’s get down to business.

The Simple Frappuccino Copycat Recipe

The delicious, tasty beginner drink that’s easy to prepare. It’s delicious, takes only a few moments, and doesn’t require much skill. Here’s what you’ll need for this recipe.


  • Whole milk – 5-6oz or ¾ cup. You can use your choice of milk, but whole milk offers better consistency for your frappuccino.
  • About a cup of crushed ice should work, or you can use a similar volume of ice cubes.
  • Sugar or sweetened condensed milk
  • Double shot of espresso or coffee concentrate, whatever you choose.
  • Whipped cream


  • Place all ingredients except the whipped cream in a blender and let it run. 30-40 seconds should be enough if you use crushed ice. If you’re using ice cubes, give it some more time so the cubes can break and dissolve.
  • Pour it into a cup and add some chocolate syrup for taste and the recognizable cappuccino taste.
  • Top it up with whipped cream and maybe garnish that with another small dose of chocolate syrup.

While most of us see whipped cream as an essential ingredient, it is also the most significant contributor to the calorie count of the beverage. If you’re watching weight, watch that whipped cream as well.

Speaking of optional ingredients, you can replace sugar with sweetened condensed milk. It helps make a thicker frappuccino and also adds more calories. I find condensed milk more satisfying and has a better texture, but take your pick!

Making A Caramel Frappuccino Copycat

Once you’ve mastered texture and optional ingredients, it becomes easier to have more variants for your beverage. The principles remain largely the same, but not all new ingredients for flavor can be treated the same. Here’s what you’ll need for the caramel frappuccino copycat recipe.


  • 5-6oz or ¾ cup of whole milk
  • Crushed ice, slightly more than one cup
  • Sugar or sweetened condensed milk
  • Caramel sauce, ⅓ cup
  • Caramel syrup
  • Double shot espresso or an equivalent volume of coffee concentrate
  • Whipped cream


  • Place all ingredients except caramel syrup and whipped cream in a blender.
  • If you’re using a double-shot espresso, you may choose to skip adding it to the blender. Instead, please put it in the mug and add the blended contents over the espresso. I’d put it in the blender.
  • Allow the blender to run for 30-40 seconds. Once you’re done, you’ll see a thick and delicious frappuccino that’s ready to drink.
  • Pour it into a cup and top it with whipped cream.
  • Add caramel syrup to garnish.
